George’s Service Center

The station was designed by Associated Oil Company and constructed between 1932 and 1938 at its current location on the corner of Jackson and North Fourth Street. This small, stuccoed automobile service station displays characteristics of Art Moderne architecture. Despite the removal of the gas pumps, the small office space still features original wrap-around windows beneath a large canopy.

The first proprietor of the station was Edward Morihiro, but was taken over by William and George Yasukawa after World War II. It distributed Flying A gasoline and provided automobile repair services from the detached garage under the name Bill’s Service Center.

Mr. George Hanada took over the service station in 1953 and operated it for 40 years before selling the business to Fred Kido in 1993. Although it no longer offers gasoline, George's Service Center has provided auto service to the San Jose Japantown community for over 70 years.
