California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Mountain View

Skilled in agriculture and the cultivation of unfavorable land, Japanese immigrants flourished as flower-growers, claiming land along the San Francisco Bay. With 9 Japanese family nurseries in Mountain View, a modest Japantown was established in the 2 blocks near Dana and View Streets. Despite the fact that only the former fish market and an early church site remain in downtown, the Mountain View “Oldtimers” continue to meet annually to share stories and reminisce of times gone by.
