California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Brawley

The Imperial Valley thrived in agriculture, attracting successful Japanese farmers and seasonal workers to the border towns. In 1941, Brawley had both a Buddhist and Methodist church, 2 Japanese Schools, 14 restaurants, 2 pool halls, a dentist, a midwife, a tofu-ya, and several stores. Very little remains of the once fruitful Japanese farming town.
